How to Match Your Qualifications to a Job
How to Match Your Qualifications to a JobHow to Match Your Qualifications to a JobEmployers will usually only spend a few seconds deciding if you are a good enough fit for a job to warrant a more thorough review of your resume and titelblatt letter, so you need to make sure that it is immediately obvious that you havemany of the skills, experiences, and qualities that they value fruchtwein highly. Its also important to focus on your most relevant skills andstrengthswhen writing resumes and cover letters, and when interviewing. The closer your match to the position and show the employer how you would add value to the organization, the better your chances of job search success. Analyze the Job Listing Job postings are typically broken out into several sections. Expect to see information about the company, details on the desired qualifications of applicants, and a description of the responsibilities involved in the role. Some are brief, while others include more details about the job and the company. Take the time to review the job posting, so you are familiar with what the employer wants. Heres how todecode a job advertisement, so you can decide whether to apply and start work on your resume and cover letter. Make a List If the job is a good match, the next step is to make a connection between your skills and the employers requirements by creating a list of the preferred qualifications for the ideal candidate for your target job. If a job advertisement is well-written and detailed, you might be able to assemble much of your list right from the ad. Extract any of thekeywordsdescribing skills, qualities, or experiences which the employer has listed as required or preferred. Also, review the job duties and make some assumptions about the qualifications needed to carry out those duties. For example, if the ad mentions that you would organize fundraising events for potential donors, you can assume that event planning skills would be highly valued and should be added to your list. Get More Information Sometimes ads for jobs are very short and dont reveal much about the employers expectations. Try looking on the companys website, since there might be a longer description in the human resources section of their site than in the ad you saw. Another strategy is to search job sites like Indeed.com by the saatkorn job title to get a sense of what other employers are looking for in candidates. Also, search Google to see descriptions of similar jobs. For example, if you are applying for a credit analyst position, try searching by using the phrase credit analyst job description. Heres how to useadvanced search optionsto find job information. Need Skills to Include? When youre not sure about what skills or qualities to include, check thislist of skills for resumes, cover letters, and interviews. It includes lists of general skills most wanted by employers, plus skills for a variety of occupations. Include the most relevant skills in your resu me and cover letter. Ask for Advice If you are really motivated to land a particular job, interview professionals in the field and ask them what it takes to excel in their job. Reach out tocollege alumnithrough your colleges career and/or alumni office, LinkedIn contacts, and family friends to generate a list of contacts for these consultations. Make a Match Once you have assembled a detailed list of the qualifications for your target job, review each item on the list and try to think of how you might prove that you possess that asset. Write a sentence about as many of the qualifications as possible, detailing how you used that skill or exhibited that quality in a work, volunteer, academic, or co-curricular role. Whenever possible, point to any positive results or recognition you received while applying the skill. For example, if a job requires strong writing skills, you might say, While working as a campaign intern, I wrote press releases about the candidates platform which resulted in two articles in the local media. Prioritize Your Qualifications in Your Cover Letter Prioritize the sentences about your qualifications and incorporate the hardest-hitting statements into yourcover letter. Compose athesis statementfor the beginning of yourcover letterwhich references 2-4 assets which make you an excellent fit for the job. For example, for a bank teller job you might say, My strong mathematics skills, customer service orientation, attentiveness to detail, and ability to work with precision make this job an excellent fit for me. In subsequent paragraphs, you should provide examples of how and where you applied those skills. Review Your Resume Review your existingresumeand make sure that you have incorporated as many statements about the preferred qualifications for the job as possible. List the highest priority phrases at the beginning of your descriptions to get the most attention. If you have a couple of jobs which are more qualifying than others , you might develop a lead category towards the top of your resume like Related Experience (if they are not your most recent jobs). Take a few minutes to update the descriptions of the jobs youve held.Jazzing up your resume job descriptionscan make your resume much more impressive. Include Headlines Some candidates will have clusters of experiences which correspond to key qualifications. Take, for instance, the example where writing and event planning are highly qualifying for a particular job. If a candidate has experiences which fit those categories, then they might create headings like Writing Experience and Event Planning Experience and place the related experiences in those sections of the resume. Relevant headings will draw the employers attention to key qualifications at a glance. During Job Interviews Prior to interviewing, review the list of qualifications you created when working on your job application. Be prepared to discuss the specific skills and assets you hav e during job interviews. You can also reiterate what qualifies you to be selected in your job interviewthank-you notes.

How to share a story that wont make a listeners eyes glaze over
How to share a story that wont make a listeners eyes glaze overHow to share a story that wont make a listeners eyes glaze overDo you ramble, ramble and ramble on until you get to the point? How many times have you started telling a story, only to watch a listener or crowd lose interest and start checking their phone intermittently?Heres how to get better at storytelling.Draw on your own life experiencesThis could come in handy.Jonah Sachs, author of Winning the Story Wars andCEO of Free Range Studios, told the Harvard Business Reviewabout how this can be of use.Think of a moment in which your own failures led to success in your career or a lesson that a parent or mentor imparted. Any of these things can be interesting emotional entry points to a story.Beware of your surroundingsYoull be glad you did.Daniel McDermon, a writer and former editor at The New York Times, writes about this in the publication.Think about the context in which youre telling your story. Are you standing onstage in front of unfamiliar people? Or are you at your cousins wedding? The last thing you want is to make your audience uncomfortable, so you need to read the room. If youre unsure whether your story is right for the audience, ask someone who might be there - an organizer or aleidher speaker would do.Remember, theres beauty in the stakesThe Moth, which hosts live storytelling events, features guidelines on its website. One of the tips is to have some stakes.Stakes are essential in live storytelling. What do you stand to gain or lose? Why is what happens in the story important to you? If you cant answer this, then think of a different story. A story without stakes is an essay and is best experienced on the page, not the stage. Start in the action, the website reads. If youre a leader, be sure to choose your stories wiselyDont just jump right in.Brett Bourbon, Ph.D., a consultant, associate professor of English and co-director of the Master of Leadership program at the University of Dall as, writes on the schools website about why leaders should keep this in mind.Leaders establish what they stand for and who they are through the stories they tell and through the stories told about them. These stories create a community around the leader, who in turn uses additional stories to guide this community. Leaders can also alienate the community they lead by the stories they tell and the stories they come to symbolize. In leadership, stories always matter. (Be careful how you tweet), he writes.Tie up loose ends the right wayJenn Tardif, a yoga teacher and a Product Marketing Manager at Adobe, writes about storytelling on the website for Adobe 99U. She outlines an approach called the Five Beats of Storytelling by storytelling expert, performer, comedian and host of The MothDavid Crabb. The last beat is about the resolution. In the fifth beat, you have an opportunity to highlight what makes the story unique. If youve just described a failure or challenge, this would be the time to reflect on what you learned. This is also where you could try to sell something - if youre using storytelling as part of a pitch - or recap your competency if applying for a job,Tardif writes.

Steven Slaters JetBlue Outburst Should Not Influence Career
Steven Slaters JetBlue Outburst Should Not Influence CareerSteven Slaters JetBlue Outburst Should Not Influence CareerAfter hearing about how Steven Slater quit his job on JetBluethe other day, it is hard not to be reminded of the famous scene from thestoner-flick Half Baked where Scarface quits his job at a fast-food joint bycursing out his shift mates over the intercom, throwing a burger at a customerand leaving. Half Baked is a movie. In real life, Mr. Slater got into an argument witha JetBlue passenger, was hurt in the incident andcould not let go of his anger when the passenger further fueled his rage as theflight came to a halt. Slater would curse this passenger out over the PAsystem before he grabbed his own bags, swiped some beer, activated theinflatable emergency chute, slid down, and went home. He has since becomea hero. Recent comments from people on the street suggest that theywould like to leave their job with similar flair. Mr. Slater is enjoying his 15 minutes of fame, butunless he is able to parlay this into a well-paying gig, his career outlooklooks bleak. What airline would hire Mr. Slater after hearing about hisrecent outburst, especially with the knowledge that he might be quick to snapat another passenger given his open contempt for those that try to skirt thecarry-on baggage rules? Airlines aside, what company would want to hiresomeone who cursed out a customer, showed a perceived disregard for theirsafety and despite all this, still made sure to steal some beer on his way outthe proverbial door? Here is what most people should do if they plan to quit ajob Never Quit Out of Anger Think before you make a decision to quit. We are still dealing with anunstable economy and you need to know which companies are even hiring before you thinkabout leaving your current job. Without a backup plan, you will regretyour decision. Especially when you cant collect unemployment, havetrouble finding a job and realize that you cannot pay your bills. Breathe. Have a Backup Plan You may want to have a job to go to before actually taking action. Update your resume and your LinkedIn page, reach out to your contacts and departureyour job search. When you have an offer and know for sure that you willhave money coming in, its time to get the ball rolling on leaving your currentsituation. Dont Burn Your Bridges Write a thoughtful letter of resignation and discuss what you have learned andwhat you appreciated about your time at the company. Try to glaze overany negative reasons for leaving with words like, I feel after so many years,it was time to take on a new challenge. And despite writing a letter, make sure you speak with your supervisors. Kill them with kindness. Give Ample Notice Thestandard is usually two weeks, but if you are a vital person that will be hardto replace, and youre not going to start at Company B in a month, you shouldbe open to the idea of giving more time if needed. If you are justquitting, beca use you just want to take a break from working, you should bereceptive to the idea of working longer than two weeks until they find a replacement. Set parameters and give deadlines, because some companies might take advantageof your generosity. Stay in Touch Evenif you are working for a different company, it doesnt hurt to shoot an emailwishing your previous employer well during the holidays or just because youwant to show you still care. And if you have friends at the company, social networking allows you to stay in contact andkeep up with the latest gossip. If the situation arises, you may want togo back to work for your previous employer and this is your best opportunity tokeep your name in their heads and be in the loop should a position open. And finally, if you feel the need to slide down an emergencychutejust go to the park they have slides, too. Posted by Jon Minners, Vault.com

This messy hairstyle (that Meghan Markle loves) is a secret power move
This messy hairstyle (that Meghan Markle loves) is a secret power moveThis messy hairstyle (that Meghan Markle loves) is a secret power moveThough the high ballerina bun has been given praise since it first appeared in the early 1800s (it was often used to connote a symbol of high social status) there is something to be said about the power of the low bun as well. The high bun may represent power but the low bun is the hairstyle of the modern, highly dynamic, multitasking working woman. Its utilitarian and unfussy, and it allows women to feel a bit freer about putting themselves together, says Sophie Buhai, a Los Angeles jewelry designer, told Vanity Fair in an article titled Why the Bun Is the Power Hairstyle of Our Multi-Tasking Age.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraIt gets the hair out of your face but is chic and sophisticated at the same time and maybe not as overt as a high b un which can often look (and feel) painful if it is pulled back to tight. But the low bun exudes comfort, class, and functionality at the same time. Its the hat trick of hairstyles. The Meghan Markle EffectIt helps that the low bun, or messy bun, is often sported by a woman named Meghan Markle, whom everyone from celebrities to creatures living under rocks wants to emulate. In the past, the low bun was often associated with schoolmarms and spinsters (pretty much anyone who lived on or near a farm, rode a bike and had a strong distaste for small dogs sported this look), but thanks to the Duchess and other celebrities like Kate Bosworth, Blake Lively, and Kerry Washington the low bun is the it hairstyle because of its versatility. Her hair is full of secret (strategies)What is especially interesting is that part of the appeal of the look is the messiness, which Markle has perfected. It is a contrast to the tightly pulled back high bun, but it still gives off an air of high capability.H annah Goldfield wrote in The New York Times in 2017, If eyeglasses are a quick code for smart, the low bun, sometimes known as a chignon, has become the equivalent for sophisticated - but unlike, say, the French twist, it offers the added benefit of not making you look like youve tried too hard. The low bun looks good on everyone, and its also eminently achievable. It works on clean hair and greasy hair, straight hair, and curly hair, long hair and relatively short hair, with a side part or with a part down the middle. It takes virtually no skill You simply sweep the hair back at the nape of the neck (is there a body part mora poetic or demurely beautiful, both in name and in form?) and use an elastic to twirl it around into a neat whorl. The idea of effortless beauty can seem like wishful thinking at best - but if theres a single practice that comes close, its the low bun.The messiness is part of the strategy and is actually a bit of a challenge to those that prefer the high bun or a perfect blowout (which Kate Middleton tends to favor.) Markles choice to wear her hair like this has been seen as rebellious and powerful move. Sociologist, image consultant, and personal style guru Dr.Anna Akbari told Elle Magazine, The way we communicate is a full-spectrum, multi-sensory communication. Bottom line - Markle is aware shes sending signals. I dont think anything that shes doing is haphazard.Akbari noted that perhaps this is the hairstyle to sport if you were going to vorstellungsgesprch at a cool, new tech startup. You would go with the high bun or blowout for the law firm. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

7 Signs Its Time for you to Leave Your Job - The Muse
7 Signs Its Time for you to Leave Your Job - The Muse7 Signs Its Time for you to Leave Your Job - The MuseWe all get content at times, especially at a job that pays decently well and comes with a good group of co-workers. Maybe your job isnt what you really want to do for the rest of your life, but you start convincing yourself, This is fine- its bedrngnis my dream job, but itll do for now. And theres leidhing wrong with feeling content or comfortable at your job. But keep in mind that being content can easily lead to complacency- and thats the danger zone. Complacency tends to generate excuses (Ill put up with this just for a few more months, or I just dont have time to do a job search right now) and leads us to settle (This job will do for now, or Maybe I dont need to be a VP or fill in your blank dream job here). Worst of all, complacency will eventually lead to fear. And fear holds us back. I have seen too many smart and talented friends and colleagues who have stayed in just-O K jobs. When they do decide to move on, theyve been out of the job market for so long that they cant even take that first step to update their resume- let alone apply for jobs. Theyre gripped by fear of re-entering a different job market than the one they last recall. They have almost forgotten what its like to go on interviews. They feel inadequate compared to their peers and think the train has already passed them by. These feelings of fear can quickly get overwhelming, and the easy way out is often to postpone the job search, to ignore the matter at hand- and to spend more time in a less-than-dream-job. So, if theres one piece of advice I could give to anyone who wants to advance professionally, its this Do not get complacent. In fact, make time to regularly check in with yourself about your career happiness and goals and consider whether it might be time to leave your job and make your next move. What are the telltale signs that its time to seriously consider leaving your curren t job and pursuing the next thing? Here are seven strong signals.1. Youre Living the Status QuoIf youve been at the same company and position without any advancement or promotion for the past three years- and you want to continue moving your career forward- its time to look elsewhere. Even in a large organization where promotions are tough to come by, you should be able to make some sort of upward movement within this time frame. 2. You Dont Get FeedbackIf your direct manager doesnt provide feedback on your performance- or the feedback is generic and thus difficult to take action on- its pretty tough to learn what it takes to move up within your organization or grow as a professional. The best managers are engaged with your career development and regularly offer advice and guidance- and if yours doesnt, you owe it to yourself to look elsewhere. 3. Youre elend LearningIf your learning curve has flattened out or youre really not feeling challenged, this may signal a need to move on. Y ou may not be learning something new every day on the job, but you should be improving upon your core skills and picking up new ones. You often have to take this into your own hands, of course- asking to be involved in a new project, signing up for courses youre interested in, or attending a relevant conference or seminar in your discipline, for example. But if these possibilities dont exist at your current job, its a sign that the company is not serious about investing in your career development.READY TO MAKE A CAREER MOVE LIKE YESTERDAY?Trust us, we know the feeling. Check out Tons of Openings Now 4. Theres a Constant ExodusDo you find yourself going to a colleagues going-away drinks way too frequently? Does everyone around you seem to be constantly updating their resumes and LinkedIn profiles? When you start noticing a pattern of disgruntled employees (especially the good ones) seeking exits and frequent departures, this usually indicates there are better places to work- and you probably have options. No, Im not encouraging anyone to blindly follow the herd, but take it as a warning sign, and ask your departing pals why they chose to move on. Their responses may be applicable to your situation as well.5. Theres Regular RestructuringIf your company is regularly announcing a re-org or shuffling management around, this may indicate leadership issues or a shaky strategic direction. (A friend told me she has had four different bosses in the past year- this cant be good.) Re-orgs can provide an opportunity to step up and shine but more often than not, they signal turbulence. And more importantly, they create a challenging environment for your career development needs to get any attention. Your priorities, focus, and progress will inevitably be impacted. 6. Headhunters Want YouThose annoying emails and calls from recruiters may not result in a new job- but dont ignore them completely. A heavy volume of inbound calls and emails may indicate your industry is hot and companies are hiring (read a great opportunity to move up in position and salary level). I usually consider these conversations as market research to see whos hiring, what roles and functions are in need, and the average salary range for comparable jobs.7. It Feels Like Time to GoBeyond these warning signs, dont ignore what your gut is telling you. No one knows your work environment better than you do. And if you get the sense that you might be better off somewhere else, heed that inner voice and go exploring. Given that many of us spend over 40 hours per week at our jobs, you owe it to yourself to regularly evaluate your career situation. Even if youre perfectly happy at your current job, make it a habit to check in with yourself (or with a trusted buddy, if thats helpful) at least twice a year. Not only is it a good opportunity to review your accomplishments (and get in the habit of regularly updating your resume), but youll also force yourself to gauge the market conditions with in your industry. Best of all, going through this process will mean youll either find more satisfaction out of your current job- or youll discover new opportunities and move on to the next big thing.

Feeling Stuck in Your Career Heres How Yoga Can Help
Feeling Stuck in Yur Career Heres How Yoga Can Help Another Monday unfolds, replacing the weekends adventures with meetings, memos, and morning commutes. What happened to the power career you imagined the one where waking up each morning welches exciting, the office dress code was fashionista, and every executive decision made the world a better place? Somewhere along the way, monotony and complacency flooded in, drowning your motivation.Albert Einsteins famous quote reminds us that nothing happens until something moves. Yoga teaches that we are that something, and that once we start moving, anything is possible. Here are three ways yoga can help unstick your career and get you back into your groove 1. Yoga Boosts ConfidenceGenerating the momentum to move out of a current situation, however unsatisfying, is nearly impossible without confidence. The more disheartening the circumstance, the less confidence we have.A yoga practice provides a nurturing embr ace to the discouraged psyche, imparting confidence with every pose. Whether a beginner yogi or advanced practitioner, every foray onto the mat requires you to attempt something new fruchtwein likely to fail at your first attempt, persevere, and ultimately succeed. We condition ourselves on the mat to embrace challenges, to grow comfortable with our own discomfort, and to endure until we succeed. The lasting result is a hard-borne confidence that carries over into all areas of life, from the yoga mat to the workplace. With your confidence reignited, formerly daunting career opportunities suddenly take on a new sheen of enticement. schreibstube relationships that were previously draining become less prickly whenyou can stand confidently behind your decisions and work caliber. Confidence shifts perception, providing the necessary fuel to stimulate a new adventure or breath life into a dull workday. With a fresh morning cup of confidence, you can step into the office willing to risk fa ilure, yet believing in your ability to succeed. 2. Stretch Your Body, Stretch Your BoundariesYoga stretches not just the body, but also the self-imposed limitations on our capabilities. When we participate in the physical transformation of the body and successfully manifest previously impossible feats like touching our toes, bending backwards, or even standing on our heads, our definition of what is possible for ourselves expands. We unlock creativity through movement, which a monotonous daily work routinemay stifle.Creativity stimulates growth, both on the yoga mat and in the cubicle. Ifyou want to advance your career, you must be creative enough to conceive and initiate new possibilities. 3. Yoga Energizes From WithinEven backed by an overflow of confidence, the most creative intentions will not manifest without energy. Momentum demands we give it an energetic push to gain velocity. You will only find defeatwhen youseek outwardly for the inspiration to propelyou forward. Whenever we rely on outside sources for inspiration, thosewellsprings eventually disappear. Vacations end, payday bonuses get spent, and even shiny new offices grow dull.Yoga, however, recharges us from the inside. It is an honest celebration of self, regardless of outside circumstances. When we feel worthy, confident, and excited because of who we are, we become our own sources of inspiration.Confidence, creativity, and inspiration are all self-expressions yoga draws forth. These qualities are powerful enough to transform our bodies, expand our perspective, and add innovation to our daily work routines. When transformation happens from within, our confidence soars, we are more willing to take calculated risks, and no obstacles are insurmountable. This attitude is exactly what we need to move forward in our careers and in our lives.Lara Alexiou is the author of Become the Architect of Your Body, Mind, and Soul.Visit her online at https//www.steamtownyoga.com/books and follow her on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.

How to Hire Seasonal Employees
How to Hire Seasonal EmployeesHow to Hire Seasonal EmployeesYou wont always be able to predict when your company needs some extra help. But if yours is like most businesses, there are times throughout the year when you know a spike in workload is coming and can prepare. It could be when tax time rolls around or when college interns say their goodbyes and head back to school. Whatever the situation, the solution is the same seasonal employees. Here are times when it can be particularly helpful to hire seasonal employeesSummer staffing - Its not unusual for companies to find themselves short-handed during the summer as more employees take time off. A recent Accountemps survey found that a majority of workers save their vacation time for June, July and August, and respondents plan to take an average of 10 days off this summer. Bringing in seasonal support can help stem productivity gaps and keep key projects on track.Open enrollment periods - This is when employees throughout the Unite d States sign up for health insurance plans and other benefit programs for the year ahead. Companies need to evaluate, coordinate and communicate the policies, practices and procedures, all while making sure data-entry tasks and day-to-day operations arent neglected.Hectic holidays - Many businesses get extremely busy in November and December. Workplace stress levels can swell during the holidays, when there are fewer employees around to help with the extra customer service duties and end-of-year responsibilities. Retailers, delivery and logistics companies, businesses in the hospitality and tourism industries, and others often need significant extra help during the lead-up to the holidays.wildbewegt tax season - If you work in accounting and finance and find yourself buried in piles of paperwork and looming deadlines, youre probably in the midst of tax season. Accounting departments and firms are impacted the most, with large workloads and long hours at this time of year. Seasona l employees can serve as invaluable reinforcements. When you find yourself in this type of situation, you need an effective strategy to quickly find, win over and prepare highly skilled seasonal employees. Here are three critical steps.1. Engage with a top staffing firmA good relationship with a first-rate recruiter is essential to successful seasonal hiring. A specialized staffing agency like knows the candidate marketplace in your industry and city. We have a database of millions of job seekers, including many that you and other companies wouldnt have access to on your own. Moreover, it can be challenging to evaluate and hire a large number of people in a short amount of time when you and your team are already stretched thin. A staffing agency can make this process much easier and help you identify and bring on board lots of seasonal employees at once. We can effectively evaluate experience and skills to make the right matches - and fast.SEARCH FOR JOB CANDIDATES2. Be ready to make an offer to seasonal candidatesJust as you would with a candidate for a full-time position, assess potential seasonal employees based on the required skills and experience, performance expectations, personality, and corporate culture fit. Conduct reference checks to make sure youve made the best match possible. But before you do all that, find out what range you should expect to pay. The market is competitive even for temporary workers today. If a recruiter is helping you hire seasonal help, they can work with you to ensure you offer compensation that meets the market standard. You also can use resources such as Robert Halfs annual Salary Guides.3. Set clear expectationsEven with a seasonal employee, you need to have a strong sense of the specific duties and responsibilities of the job youre staffing. If youre working with a staffing agency, inform the recruiter of the time frame and key expectations, and make sure they are communicated to job candidates during the interview. Its a w orthwhile exercise to write a detailed job description before you bring the interim worker on board, and go over it on the first day. Then stick with it, avoiding the temptation to give the seasonal employee whatever random assignment needs doing. One of the advantages is that in the event the temporary position becomes full time, youll be able to accurately evaluate how well the person fulfilled the job as you described it. Seasonal employees often make great candidates for full-time positions.Whether youre impacted by time-consuming open enrollment periods or outgoing interns, a little preparation can go a long way. Apply this hiring strategy to find the best seasonal employees who can provide extra support when there is a temporary increase in workload - and take the load off you and the rest of your staff.

10 Smart Moves to Make When Nothings Going Right in Your Life
10 Smart Moves to Make When Nothings Going Right in Your Life 10 Smart Moves to Make When Nothings Going Right in Your Life In the Army, I taught an introductory course on what to do if you became a prisoner of war. Iâd start by saying that I hoped this would be the least relevant course the students ever took. Thatâs my hope here too- although the truth is, things fall apart in peopleâs lives all the time. Maybe itâs a relationship, a job, a business- something that makes up the bedrock youâre accustomed to standing on. Tuesday, itâs there; Wednesday itâs gone. Thursday, you still have to function. All of which leads us to todayâs lesson. When things arenât going right, how do you keep moving forward? Here are 10 ideas. 1. Nose Down, Do Your Job The top federal prosecutor in Manhattan is named Preet Bhrara (Disclosure: His brother is the CEO of my company). In a speech a couple of years ago, Preet suggested success involves emulating a line from the movie The Departed: Be the guy who does his job. When you donât know what else to do, thatâs a pretty good plan: Strive to be the Steady Eddie that everyone else can count on while you figure out your next step. 2. Look Out for Chances to Be Happy for Other People Admission time: I get pitched all the time by people who are younger than I am and who are making tons of money. Sometimes I canât help but wonder: Why wasnât I the one with an internet startup at age 14? OK, the strict answer to that is that when I was 14, internet access cost a dollar a minute. The broader point is that youâll be happier and learn more if you make an effort simply to be happy for othersâ successes- and maybe be willing to learn from them as well. 3. Make Connections for Others An old friend of mine from school is looking for work. It turned out, another friend of mine from a completely different social circle has a connection at a company that my school friend might be perfect for. Will it work out? I donât know, but making the connection made me feel great. I think itâs important to take these kinds of steps without looking for any kind of quid pro quo. Personally, I canât predict the future, but I think itâs unlikely Iâll ever be looking for another full-time job again, so thatâs not my motivation here. But helping others in any way helps you take your mind off your own problems. 4. Say Thank You Chances are you see someone every day who has a thankless job- literally thankless, as in, nobody ever thanks him or her for doing what they do. Maybe itâs the doorman or the bus conductor. If you canât think of someone who fits the bill, imagine a traffic cop giving parking tickets. Think about how much it means to that person on the rare occasion when someone actually says, thanks for what you do. Imagine how heâll feel about you when youâre that person! 5. Prune Your Belongings I have the zeal of a convert on this one. If a physical thing- clothes, books, papers- doesnât give you joy, the best thing to do is to give it away. 90% of Americans have 2,000% more stuff than they need- or even want. (Hat tip, obviously, to the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo) 6. Share Your Knowledge Nothing makes you feel better or more useful than simply sharing what you know with other people. Much like looking for the North Star when youâre lost, look for chances to teach others when youâre not sure what else to do with yourself. What do I know? Well, if you want to write a book, write an internet column with a million readers a month, or learn how to run a super-effective marketing campaign on Facebook, email me. (Also, I can teach someone to drive a stick shift and parallel park on a hill like nobodyâs business.) 7. Visit Someone The scarcest commodity any of us has isnât money; itâs time. That means sharing your time with others is also your greatest gift. The truth is there are people for whom that gift is more precious than you can ever imagine. We named my baby daughter after my wifeâs 90-something grandmother, and one of the most joyous moments weâve had was bringing her to meet her namesake in the nursing home. 8. Say âIâm Sorryâ You donât need to go through life guilt-ridden, but there are things weâve all done to hurt others- intentional or not- that we never got around to apologizing for. Taking that step is always a positive move. I woke up recently remembering a class in junior high. We had to write stories each week, and I turned a classmate into a recurring character long after it was clear she was not comfortable with the attention. I donât want to call her out here- even after all these years- but on the off chance she might read it, maybe sheâll remember. If so, Iâm sorry! 9. Say âI Forgive Youâ Related to the last one, of course, we all have people we need to forgive. Maybe itâs a family member, or a colleague, a friend- or even someone who doesnât know you well or even know what they did wrong. In my case, at that same school I was picked on by a group of bigger kids. Decades later, Iâm not sure if theyâd even remember, but I forgive them. (Caveat: Thatâs not the same thing as forgetting. You can forgive someone but still never trust them again.) 10. Show Up (A.k.a., Go to the Funeral) There are moments when other people need you there, and while Iâm fortunate not to have had many occasions that fit the bill for this example, showing up at the funeral of someoneâs loved ones is at the top of the list. My friend Griff taught me this lesson, when I went to his fatherâs wake a decade ago. To my mind- of course I would go. Thatâs what friends do, no matter what other ways their lives are tangled at the time. Still, to his credit, Griff has never forgotten, and Iâm glad it demonstrated how much I valued our friendship. One thing bosses can do to strengthen teamwork at the office
One thing bosses can do to strengthen teamwork at the office One thing bosses can do to strengthen teamwork at the office âAll animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.âThatâs Orwellian logic you may know well if youâve ever worked at a place where some people get all the perks, and others get all the work. The very American idea of the work family depends on maintaining the truth- or fiction - that everyone is treated equally in the workplace.I learned how quickly friends could become jealous enemies at one of my previous jobs. When we found out that a couple of my co-workers were able to work from home and leave early while the rest of us had to deal with the horrors of subway riders and overnights, we seethed. The unfairness of it all kept nagging at me. Why did I have to be a vampire who couldnât socialize or see the sun, while the favored ones kept getting better daytime hours? Why was I getting squished between five subway riders with varying levels of hygiene, while other coworkers got to work from the comfort of their bed? What made those lucky few so sp ecial? What did they have that I didnât?I never got a satisfying answer and Iâm sure it was a cause that contributed to some of my co-workers leaving.Unsurprisingly, then, studies show there is one thing bosses can do to improve teamwork and morale: stop playing favorites.Favoritism: the bossâs worst habitThis is the toxic environment favoritism causes, and Iâm glad a study has come along to back me up.A recently published study in the Journal of Vocational Behavior found that favoritism increased loyalty and engagement for those who received it- but it was also the root of envy and a competition that tore apart teams. An example the researchers gave would be an employee thinking that, âmy status at works depends on my performance relative to others.âResearchers found that employees who witnessed their co-workers being favored felt especially jealous when they werenât the object of favoritism as well - but the envy was muted when their manager showed them favor t oo.The study also found a correlation between being being envied and ostracism. Feeling ignored and isolated at work led to the employeesâ decisions to leave. For companies, the employee turnover that results from favoritism by managers is a big reason to stop the practice. Hiring new employees is one of the biggest uses of managersâ time.Younger employees notice favoritism moreYoung employees are quick judges of favoritism. Unsurprisingly, younger employees (like me) are especially sensitive to being denied opportunities that could further our careers. Called âidiosyncratic deals,â these special work arrangements could include company-sponsored training, exclusive lunches and happy hours, and customizable hours and schedules. Those are the social and professional developmental resources younger employees crave, in part because they are signs of advancement and respect.Try making special work arrangements less specialThese special work arrangements for favored employees a re only on the rise. Theyâre increasingly being used to retain and promote top talent. In a 2011 survey of 303 senior business executives at U.S. companies, 84% said favoritism happens in their workplace. This latest study doesnât mean that managers should stop making special arrangements altogether in the modern workplace. Just donât let it become so obvious that everyone else feels second-class.Even better, create an environment thatâs as equal as possible. We should follow the lesson of what the researchers concluded: employees felt less envious when they believed that the deals were ânegotiable and available to everyone.â

What Makes a 21st Century Woman Executive - FlexJobs
What Makes a â21st Century Woman Executiveâ - FlexJobs What Makes a â21st Century Woman Executiveâ 34NewsOnWomen.com, which holds over 6000 women in its search engine, works for more women in management, more women on boards of directors, and more women interested in Math and Science. NewsonWomen.com has also been named one of the top 100 women blogs and it is the largest search engine of women achievers available on the internet. A woman executive in the 21st century understands: How to Change with the Times Letâs start with Ginni Rometty, now CEO and Chairman of the Board of IBM, the traditional bastion of Corporate America. And what did Ginni do there? Ginni changed it! Earlier in her career when she was Senior Vice President of IBM Global Business Services, she successfully integrated PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting into IBM, forever changing the culture and the direction of Big Blue (do we all know thatâs what they used to call IBM?). The acquisition of PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting by IBM was the largest in professional services history! So, right off the bat we see that this 21st century executive knew IBM needed to change with the times. Ginni also realized that business is global. She pioneered IBMs expansion in the emerging economies, establishing IBMâs âGrowth Marketsâ organization. Ginni recognized the need for change and for a global approach to business and as a leader was able to persuade her co-workers that her strategy was right, and time has proven it so. I wonder if anyone at Northwestern University recognized the greatness in this electrical engineering and computer science major when she was in school. Letâs recap. The 21st century woman executive is aware of the need to change with the times, takes a global approach to business, and is a persuasive leader ready to implement the strategies she believes in. But what else is she? How to be a Source of Help and Guidance to Other Women Amy Schulman is a good example of this. An innovative leader in healthcare, Amy is Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Pfizer, President of Pfizer Nutrition, Business Unit Lead for Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, and the Executive Sponsor of Pfizerâs Global Womenâs Council. Amy has been repeatedly honored for paving the way to success for other women. She is passionate about helping women and finding creative ways to increase opportunities for them. âThere are various things that derail women institutionally,â said Amy. âUnconscious bias, gender fatigue. You get nearly to the top and then you donât get a sponsor over the finish line. I want to ensure that doesnât happen to people in my organization. â Amy excels as a lawyer, and when her company was purchasing Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Amy played a key role negotiating what was the largest pharmaceutical acquisition in history. How to Demand Flexible Work Options Now we can add being innovative and a good negotiator to our list. Innovation is everything in the 21st century and leads us to our next set of skills technology. The 21st century women leading the technology charge include Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!, Susan Wocjicki, Senior Vice President of Product at Google, and Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. What do these women have in common besides all the skills mentioned above? They are all mothers. And how do they manage? One way is to set family time. Susan Wojcicki tells her team she will not answer emails from 6 to 9 pm. Sheryl Sandberg tries to always go home for dinner. Marissa Mayer took maternity leave almost immediately after starting a high visibility and extremely difficult job. All these women are telling the world women need time for their families, whether its flextime, or part time or dinner time, families need to come first during certain phases of a 21st century woman executiveâs career. And technology allows it to be possible. How to Ask to Get She must be good at âThe Ask. We all have good ideas, but if we donât ask, we donât get. A good example of âaskingâ is Christy Ferer, CEO and Founder of Vidicom. Christy had some great ideas about videos early on. She taped fashion shows, and made videos of whatâs happening in her city. And she asked if people wanted them. Now she has a hugely successful business in Vidicom, which not only keeps you up on whatâs happening with CityBuzz, but also helps brands reach their customers in new and exciting ways. All because she asked! Asking is one of the hardest things for some of us to do, but practice makes it easier, so take advantage of events and meetings and practice asking! The 21st century woman executive is, as we have seen, full of skill and tenacity innovative and tech savvy, flexible, able to change with the times, able to take a global approach to business, able to be a persuasive leader and implement strategies and, of course, good at âThe Ask. While we all canât be CEO of IBM or General Counsel of Pfizer or COO of Facebook, we can learn how to develop our abilities and learn how to be better at these skills which would most certainly help us make our way to the top.

Learning Ladders
Learning Ladders Learning Ladders Laddersâ philosophy is something we live and work by and can be expressed in various ways: Get professional support for your personal goals. Make technology and top resources meet your needs. Consider your real value and reach for it. So letâs see if you recognize any of these. Lifetime employment with one company is no longer a viable goal. A single company deciding your career development is no longer desirable. Adapting to a new vision of self-growth can be both intimidating and liberating. Ladders Philosophy RealitySo the question is: How do I manage the multiple disciplines required to succeed? And the answer to that is Ladders. Why?Because you work with teams to achieve your daily goals. And thereâs a good reason for that. The time and ability needed to focus on various critical details of your career isnât a spare-time thing.Ladders Philosophy ResultsBesides, youâre smart enough to know this is the information age.So how do you turn all that power in your own favor, while placing a dollar value on: Continuously developed talent. Hard-won skills. Your experience as a whole. And thatâs why Ladders created a rarified space where businesses and their recruiters can focus on top talent. With a view to paying them top dollar. Therefore this is a targeted, market-based space that pays both ways. Want to transform company culture Start with diversity inclusion
Want to transform company culture Start with diversity inclusion Want to transform company culture Start with diversity inclusion A recent item on my ever-growing reading list was the Boston Consulting Groupâs Gender Diversity Report. This research is chock-full of interesting nuggets, but hereâs one of the most striking: 91% of surveyed companies had invested in gender diversity programs â" yet only 27% of women said they had personally benefitted from those efforts.Time and time again, Iâve witnessed that leaders have the best of intentions. They extoll the virtues of diversity and inclusion (DI). They put together official DI programs. Yet somehow, they end up â" as in the case of some of my clients â" with senior management teams that still donât have enough women, include only those who went to elite colleges or only have one person of color. You see where this is going. What gives? The building blocks of intentional cultureLetâs widen our view for a moment. Organizational culture, or âthe way things are done around here,â is the everyday expression of your corporate values. Culture will eme rge no matter what you do, but you need to be intentional with it to reap positive results. Business leaders are taking notice with 87% of organizations citing culture and employee engagement as a top challenge to be urgently addressed, according to NACD.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!A healthy culture is no longer icing on the company cake, but a key differentiator in this tight job market. Whatâs more, many corporate scandals can be traced back to dysfunctional cultures. (Boeing and Netflix come to mind). Weâre not talking about places that failed to host lunchtime yoga classes or install video game consoles in their break rooms. If culture is paramount and an expression of company values, it follows that no one wants to go on record as not supporting women, people of color, or other underrepresented segments of the workforce. Thatâs just one reason why if your gro upâs culture isnât where you want it to be, diversity and inclusion programs are a worthy place to start. The case for DI is overwhelmingThis is not about political correctness. Your companyâs long-term outlook depends on having employees from a variety of backgrounds. In fact, that BCG report states that companies whose management teams had above-average diversity boasted innovation revenue of 45 percent, compared to 26 percent for those with below-average leadership diversity.I mean diversity in all senses of the word: gender, age, race, religion, family structure, and so on. There are endless combinations to the human experience, and they all come with valuable perspectives.âDiversity and inclusionâ are often used in the same breath, but those words arenât interchangeable. You can hire a diverse group of people and throw them together in an office, but that doesnât mean they will feel comfortable speaking their minds. Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusio n is being asked to dance.Over time being asked to âdanceâ breeds employee satisfaction and retention. When your teams feel valued and included, theyâll return the favor by being more engaged and productive.Four ways to foster DI right nowHow do you move the needle? Organizational culture is not one-size-fits-all, and therefore there is no one right plan for DI. But here are a few reliable places to start right now. Begin at the top: Culture takes shape at all levels of your company, but any major shift needs to begin with leadership. Demonstrate your authentic commitment to DI and others will follow suit. Employees will take particular note of any policies or actions that affect how they are rewarded on the job. Check your unconscious bias at the door: Perhaps you favor women because you are one yourself. Maybe you gravitate toward people who share your extroverted personality. Whatever they are, know your biases so you can detect and suppress them. Ideally, this will involve formal diversity and unconscious bias awareness training as a start. Listen up: Remember, you set the tone for your organization. Welcome othersâ opinions and let them do the talking sometimes, no matter where they fall on the org chart. Donât debate or pivot away how they feel or what they are expressing. Everyone on your team is there for a reason, right? Make sure they feel that way. Mix up your teams: It takes time for hiring practices to alter a companyâs demographics. Meanwhile, there are plenty of ways to encourage diversity. Project assignments, seating arrangements, ice breakers, company-wide presentations are all chances to mix up your staff and encourage new connections. That moment when two people who have worked in the same building for years finally shake hands? When a young person of color sees a version of herself on the board of directors? When someone from IT swings by the corner office to share an idea?Thatâs when the magic happens.Shaara Roman is founder of The Silverene Group, a boutique management consulting firm that aligns people programs with business goals to help companies create dynamic workplaces. 8 Signs Your Boss Sees You as a Leader- The Muse
8 Signs Your Boss Sees You as a Leader- The Muse 8 Signs Your Boss Sees You as a Leader- The Muse Itâs natural to wonder âWhatâs next?â- or, more accurately, when youâll climb to the next rung on the ladder in your career. In an ideal world, your boss would just tell you whenever youâre making moves in the right direction. But itâs not an ideal world, and for a variety of reasons, a manager doesnât always tell a direct report he or she is a rising leader. So, you may have to find other signs that your company believes in you and your potential for growth. Sure, being assigned a leadership coach or getting invited to attend a specialized program for management are obvious indicators. But there are other, more subtle signs that might be equally telling. 1. Youâre Asked to Do Weird Jobs Every organization has a set of core tasks that people at different levels perform, but most companies also get one-off projects that they willingly do to satisfy a key customer or as an experiment in a new category. Being asked to work on something without a roadmap is often a vote of confidence. Keep in Mind If youâre asked to do a task that falls outside your job description, say âyesâ and show youâre willing to take on additional projects. (Unless, of course, you donât have the expertise, support, or bandwidth.) But if you can, and fitting it in will just be a little outside your comfort zone, see this as opportunity to show how you can stretch. 2. You Notice That People Come to You for Help Thereâs a big difference between being good at your job and good at helping others do their jobs- and a lot fewer people are good at the teaching and mentoring aspect. If people are coming to you, they either figured out you excel at something , or they were sent to you as a knowledgeable resource. Either way, itâs a good sign. Keep in Mind When people do ask for your assistance, donât do the job for them- instead show them how you think about the task and help them find their own path to be successful. This approach demonstrates that youâre management material, someone capable of making good people great. 3. Youâre Sent to Help Others This move is a frequent favorite among some managers. Letâs say your colleague is trying to untangle a complex mess and it looks like he wonât make a looming deadline. Your boss asks you to âhelp out,â which is really shorthand for âthis person is struggling and I donât have time, would you please make his problems go away?â Keep in Mind Again, donât just roll up your sleeves and fix everything. Listen to your co-workerâs perspective and then report back to your supervisor with a constructive solution that gets the work done- and allows your colleague to keep his job. 4. Youâre Invited to More Brainstorming Sessions Behind just about every successful initiative or program is a group of people who were invited to think about it before it began. Being invited means your manager values your opinion. Keep in Mind These arenât problem-solving sessions, they are thinking sessions, so donât assume your job is to know all the answers. In a thinking conversation, itâs more important to help zero in on the important questions than it is to have all the answers. 5. You Get More Direct, Critical, and Precise Feedback These comments says a lot. If you work in a feedback culture and have been flagged as a leader-in-training, expect people to be more attentive to how you work, not less. Keep in Mind You might find that some of your managerâs critiques feels too picky or hard to act on. Donât worry (yet), just take it in and listen to it. This kind of conversation is almost always a gift, so receive it that way. Look for the kernel of truth that you can learn from and use. You donât have to agree with everything you hear, but you do need to avoid getting defensive. Practice listening and saying âthanks.â 6. You Feel More Neglected I know, this is the polar opposite of being inundated with feedback, but you might experience both pretty close together. Youâll feel flooded with critical comments one week, then completely ignored for the next month. Sometimes, bosses want to see how proactive and self-starting their future leaders are. Those who need less care and feeding may have the edge over those who need constant reinforcement and direction to be productive. Keep in Mind If this situation sounds familiar, make a point to provide your manager with semi-frequent but very brief updates that convey the message âIâm doing fine, but I wanted to keep you in the loop on important projects and milestones Iâm working toward.â 7. Youâre Invited to Join a Team That Doesnât Have a Boss Boss-less teams are more the norm today than ever before, but thatâs because management has usually seen someone- or multiple people- on the team with strong leadership skills. So, they know that leadership will show up within the group when itâs needed. Keep in Mind Be the person who knows how to work well with others and who can act like a boss or a follower. Assume there are others in the group who are doing the same thing. 8. You See Shifts in Your Relationship With Management Your boss may be moving away from spending as much time with you because youâve been slated for a promotion and are leaving her group, or her manager may be spending more time with you to get to know you before you are moved into a new role thatâs closer to her. The shift means something. Keep in Mind You donât necessarily need to know whatâs happening, just roll with it and if you are confused, mention it as an observation that needs clarification- not a complaint. The best training comes from doing real work, in real life and real time. Itâs difficult and potentially dangerous for your boss to say, âHey, you are a leader-in-trainingâ because of the expectation and pressure it sets-up. But if you are being noticed for your managerial skills, there will be signs: All you have to do is notice them.
